Helping Nonprofits Address Vital Issues in Hampton Roads

  • Tidewater Friends of Foster Care

“The generous support from The Blocker Foundation helps ensure our ability to meet the needs of foster children and families across Hampton Roads, improving outcomes through programs that bridge public-service resource gaps. These include individualized tutoring, enriching extracurricular activities, life-skills training, and birthday and holiday gifts.  This is a wonderful example of how the right partnerships partnerships can work to make a meaningful difference in a community.”

Audra Bullock, President, Tidewater Friends of Foster Care
  • Girls on the Run Hampton Roads

"Girls on the Run Hampton Roads were crystal clear from the moment schools closed in March 2020 that we would do absolutely anything we could to continue to serve girls. We knew that their worries about their health, combined with social isolation during their formative years, could be catastrophic for mental health. Our small staff jumped into action to launch creative ways for girls to meet virtually and then outside in fresh air when it was deemed safe. The pandemic has required us to tighten our belt on an already lean operating budget.  The Blocker Foundation's generous grant of enabled us to move our operations to a new office space on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University, where we have a net annual savings on rent of $18,000."

Ellen Carver, Executive Director, Girls on the Run Hampton Roads
  • YMCA of South Hampton Roads

"The YMCA of South Hampton Roads is so excited to collaborate with the Blocker Foundation to further our commitment to providing equitable access to financial literacy, mental health and food insecurity through our Health Equity Campuses (HEC) initiative.  The Greenbrier Family YMCA, Effingham YMCA, and Y on Granby are working with partners to impact communities that are marginalized. It is our hope to continue to expand the efforts of our Health Equity Campuses within our YMCA Association and across the communities that it serves."

Caleb Cooper, Vice President of Equity and Belonging, YMCA of South Hampton Roads
  • The Urban Renewal Center

"The URC could not achieve our vision without support from the community. We are grateful that the Blocker Foundation shares our heart to support the homeless citizens in our midst. Words could not articulate the depth of gratitude we see on our fellow citizens faces each time we hand them a jacket, plate of food, bed for the night, or, importantly, help them secure gainful employment. The Blocker Foundation understands that the region is no stronger than the most vulnerable among us. Together we grow stronger. The future is promising with the Blocker Foundation. Again, thanks for your generosity!"

Antipas L. Harris, The Urban Renewal Cente
